Gender-specific differences in career choices between women and men have decreased over the past ten years, as reported by ZEIT ONLINE citing the Federal Statistical Office (DESTATIS).

According to the report, the proportion of women in various sectors has increased as follows from 2013 to 2023:

  • In technical research and development, the proportion of women has increased from 11% to 18%

  • In computer science, the proportion of women has increased from 14% to just under 18%

  • In forestry and hunting, as well as landscape conservation, the proportion of women has increased from 10% to 19%

  • In police and prison administration, the proportion of women has increased from 20% to over 28%

On the other hand, men are no longer as underrepresented in nursing professions and in retail as they used to be. Their proportion has increased in the following areas:

  • In elderly care, the proportion of men has increased from around 13% to 17%

  • In healthcare and nursing, obstetrics, and emergency services, the proportion of men has increased from 19% to just under 23%

  • In food retail, the proportion of men has increased from 14% to 23%

In male-dominated sectors, women are clearly catching up, and the gender-specific differences in career choices between women and men have decreased. However, they are still underrepresented. Conversely, a similar situation exists in female-dominated sectors.
