“Kamala says ‘trust women'”! U.S. President Joe Biden has dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris is not yet the candidate; she must still secure the nomination at the Democratic Party convention in August.
Jessica Valenti highlights a crucial issue in a compelling piece: how Harris, Biden, and Trump address women’s rights and, specifically, the right to abortion.
Valenti notes that Biden displays a significant lack of enthusiasm for this right, which poses a real problem during his campaign and presidency. He has consistently avoided the topic as much as possible.
In contrast, Harris has always been a strong advocate for abortion rights, most recently through the “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” campaign. She reminded voters that the rollback of the fundamental right to abortion (“Roe v. Wade”) was instigated by Donald Trump in 2022, and that he took pride in this move.
Harris said: “Proud that women across our nation are suffering? Proud that women have been robbed of a fundamental freedom? Proud that doctors could be thrown in prison for caring for their patients? That young women today have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers? How dare he?”
Another Trump presidency would mean “more bans, more suffering, less freedom.” “But we are not going to let that happen. Because we trust women. We trust women to know what is in their own best interest. And women trust all of us to fight to protect their most fundamental freedom.”
Conservatives, Valenti points out, understand that abortion is a winning issue in elections, which is why they prefer not to discuss it—especially with knowledge and passion. This makes a Harris candidacy particularly dangerous for Trump.
In a tweet from the group “Reproductive Freedom for All,” Harris is described: “There is nobody who has fought as hard for abortion rights, and she is the candidate who can defeat Trump.”
