Dr. Katarina Barley, MEP

Vice President of the European Parliament and Member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, as well as Substitute Member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

Dr. Katarina Barley is Vice President of the European Parliament and a Member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, as well as a Substitute Member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. She was the lead candidate for her party, the SPD, in the European elections in May 2019 and June 2024.
Previously, from 2013 to 2019, she was a Member of the German Bundestag and held various positions during this time, including SPD Secretary-General, Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Acting Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, as well as Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection.
Before entering politics, the trained lawyer worked as an attorney, a research associate at the Federal Constitutional Court, and as a judge at the Regional Court in Trier and the Local Court in Wittlich. Consumer protection, social justice, democracy, and the rule of law, as well as a social Europe, are key themes of Katarina Barley’s political work. Since 2022, she has been the President of the Workers’ Samaritan Federation Germany e. V. (ASB).
