“It’s a matter of honor!” says Luciana Filizzola about overcoming challenges.

Challenges are something the Brazilian native encounters plenty of in her daily work as Director of Sustainability & Communications at the steel producer GMH Group.

Around ten percent of global emissions come from the steel industry—not exactly a sustainable sector. “But from the outside, you can only criticize. From the inside, I can truly make a difference,” Luciana notes. She understands that the path to greater sustainability in her industry is not an easy one. However, sustainable steel production is essential in the fight against climate change, and paving that path is one of her responsibilities.

GMH already produces significantly fewer emissions than its competitors, but it still emits 800,000 tons of CO2 annually. The goal? To achieve carbon neutrality by 2039. Luciana knows it’s crucial to remain economically viable and competitive during this transition and to convince others that sustainability in production is an investment in the planet and future generations.

Explaining this isn’t always simple, but it’s precisely where her strengths lie. Explaining complex topics, her joy in leading, her high standards for herself, and her drive to make progress make Luciana a sought-after crisis manager.

A piece of advice Luciana often gives other women: “Be brave, take up space. If you don’t, no one will see you.”
