Prof. Dr. Andrea Römmele

Professor of Political Communication and Vice President at the Hertie School in Berlin. She researches democracy, election campaigns, and the culture of debate.

Andrea Römmele is a Professor of Political Communication and Vice President at the Hertie School in Berlin. Her research focuses on democracy, comparative political communication, political parties, and election campaigns. She was a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Modern German Studies (2012/13) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as a Visiting Fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., and at the Australian National University in Canberra.
She earned her master’s degree at San Francisco State University through a cross-registration program with the University of California, Berkeley, obtained her PhD at Heidelberg University, and completed her habilitation at the Free University of Berlin. Römmele was part of the campaign teams of Gerhard Schröder and Hillary Clinton.
She regularly appears in the media, including on Maybrit Illner, Tagesschau, zeit.de, Focus, ARD Morgenmagazin, ZDF, and The New York Times. Since 2021, she has hosted her own democracy reportage on ARD-alpha. More information is available at andrearoemmele.de.
In her book Zur Sache, she explores the role of debate and a culture of argument as central prerequisites for democracy. Her new book, Demokratie neu denken, was published on September 18, 2024, by Campus Verlag.
In 2024, Andrea Römmele was a Thomas Mann Fellow in Los Angeles, where she worked on megatrends and democracy. During the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, she provided live coverage from Washington, D.C., for various radio and television networks.
