“Sustainability management is an endurance sport,” says Sabine Kerse. She deliberately transitioned from sustainability communication to management. As a sustainability manager at DZ HYP, she focuses on action rather than talk—getting things done!

Sabine’s core responsibility is shaping the overall sustainability strategy of the real estate bank. This includes managing the fleet, employee travel, or emissions from events. Sustainability touches many departments and colleagues, from sales and building management to risk control.

Sustainability management, Sabine believes, is a team sport. “I need to build trusting relationships,” she says. This can test her patience, as feedback isn’t always timely, and she often has to follow up multiple times. “You have to learn to endure that.”

To help her stay patient and keep her inner perfectionist in check, Sabine practices Qigong. She also finds balance by doing activities that produce tangible results—sewing, baking, gardening… Creating balance when work becomes challenging is important to her.

What advice does she have for others? Be mindful of your limits, stay patient, and remain open to new roles and tasks. As a mentee, Sabine hopes to connect with a woman who is ready to take the next step in her career.
