The Greens are calling for a right to remote work—primarily to support women.

“Remote work is particularly important for women to balance family and career,” said Beate Müller-Gemmeke (Greens), a labor market policy expert. It is about time sovereignty—when and how long one works, and where.

According to ZEIT ONLINE, this debate arises from companies like SAP and Deutsche Bank reconsidering their return-to-office policies. The coalition agreement stipulates that employees should have a right to remote work.

This goal has not yet been realized. Labor Minister Heil recently presented non-binding recommendations on occupational safety for hybrid screen work. The Greens feel this is insufficient—they are calling for further guarantees for the right to remote work.

Unions also voiced criticism. Daniel Gimpel, union secretary at ver.di, regretted that the initiative seems to have been shelved. “In principle, the focus should be on enabling self-determined mobile work from home in the future,” he said.
