Women’s rights have not existed for very long here either – and they are not a given: Every one of these rights was hard fought for.

A small selection of women’s rights in Germany:

  • 1918: The active and passive right to vote for women is introduced.

  • 1949 (FRG): The phrase “Men and women are equal” is incorporated into the Basic Law (Constitution) despite much resistance.

  • 1950/1952: A maternity protection law is enacted in the GDR in 1950 and two years later in the FRG.

  • 1958 (FRG): Women are now able to manage their own assets. They also no longer need their husband’s permission to engage in employment.

  • 1994: Gender-neutral job advertisements become mandatory.

  • 2018: The Pay Transparency Act is intended to ensure greater wage equality.

“Women have never been granted rights they did not demand. They have never been given freedoms as gifts, only conceded. And they have always been given only as many opportunities as they forcefully claimed—and for which they were willing to fight,” writes journalist Bascha Mika.

It is good to remember the trailblazers who fought for these rights. In her LinkedIn post, Kerstin Erbe highlights two examples: Elisabeth Selbert, to whom we owe the phrase “Men and women are equal” in the Basic Law (she prevailed against 61 men), and Lore Maria Peschel-Gutzeit, who successfully advocated for the actual enforcement of equality. Selbert later said: “I had not believed that in 1948/49, equality would still need to be debated and that considerable resistance would have to be overcome!” What would she say today?

An overview of women’s rights can be found on the landing page for our statement shirt UNAPOLOGETIC FEMALITY. Because: Not just a shirt. It’s an attitude!

The shirt stands for uncompromising femininity, for equality, and diversity. Women should be able to live self-determined and economically independent lives. At herCAREER, we want to raise awareness of the hard-fought rights and opportunities and empower people to connect and exchange ideas within a strong community, supporting and inspiring one another. We want to promote equal opportunity and diversity—towards equal participation in a working world where everyone can reach their potential and find the right door for every individual life plan.

We realized the shirt project together with our friend and entrepreneur Sung-Hee Seewald and her label UNIQUITY. The shirt and its statement represent the impressive commitment of so many women to #GenderEquality. herCAREER wants to create a space for this and help women gain more visibility—in the spirit of REAL FEMALE EMPOWERMENT!
